Summary
aris: Archive Information System
Notarial archives are an important source of information about the past.
Wills, deeds of purchase and financial transactions of all kinds include a wealth
of historical information about the economical and social issues and events
that colored the lives of our forebears.
In the case of the notarial archives, the traditional way of classifying records -
by describing the formal characteristics provides precious little informati
on. All it tells us is that deeds belonging to a particular notary are stored in
the archives, that the deeds refer to a particular period and are contained in
so many volumes. For researchers and visitors this is little more than a list of
numbers.
A solution to this problem is making extracts of the documents, listing all
the important information in the deeds, and providing automated access using
a custom-built software application.
aris is based on the nationally-accepted standard for opening notaries'
records, developed by the Dutch Archive Council. The City Archives of
Utrecht - in close cooperation with Wang Netherlands has developed a flexible
and user-friendly software package called Archive Information System (aris).
It is no isolated package, limited to a partial application. By its structure it
is suitable for many archives sources and it enables huge files to be accessed
in numerous ways. In this article the main features of aris are dealt with.
