Republiek Texas. Tot Charles Bacarisse in
1955 zijn Ph. D. dissertatie publiceerde was
hem was genoemd.
orgina Wolfelina Frangoise Lycklama a Nije-
holt (1765- 1816), in 1782 belastingontvanger
In 1795
verscheen Nering Bögel, thans De Bastrop ge
heten, in Spaans Louisiana. Nederlands Patri
The International Archives Weeks 1984
Introduction Up to now I have received information concerning the celebration of the
International Archives Weeks (iaw) 1984 from a 150 archival services and professional
associations. All branches of our profession are represented in these reports: national,
federal, provincial and municipal services, as well as national, federal, provincial and
specialized associations. They represent 49 of the 117 member nations ofte cia, or 42%.
In 36 of these countries (73%), iaw were celebrated in some form or other. In 13 coun
tries iaw were organized for the first time.
In 1979, the iaw were celebrated in 39 countries. To my great regret, 12 of these coun
tries did not answer the questionnaire concerning the 1984 Weeks. Of the 27 who did
respond, 23 organized Weeks in 1984 or 1985.
Calendar of the Events Most of the returns indicate that it was not possible to follow
the reccommanded dates, 17 21 September 1984, i.e. the period of the xth Internati-
62
onal Archives Congress in Bonn. In fact, the celebration of iaw occured throughout
the years 1984 - 1985, during several months in some cases, but normally for some days
or even one single day.
In my opinion, it is preferable that events entitled 'international' take place on the
same dates. However, since they have to be organized around subjects interesting both
to the public and to the media of every country-and preferably be harmonized with
the themes of Round Tables or International Congresses - periodicity should not neces
sarily be quadri-annual. Moreover, it is also desirable that the dates of the International
Week or Days be synchronized with dates of national, provincial, etc. Days and Weeks
in those participating countries where they have already been organized several times
so as not to disrupt the established calendar.
From now on, it would be preferable to organize a single International Day on a spe
cific date for everybody, instead of International Weeks spread throughout the year.
The Janus logo and our archival events The 'head' of Janus served as logo in several
countries. My impression is that a modern Janus logo, designed by a graphic artist would
lend itself better for reproduction of posters, publications, etc. Moreover, it would be
desirable that a study be carried out for ica by an expert in communication and an ar
chivist on the shape of the events to be organized and their possible impact for the public.
The ica Regions and the Weeks On the basis of information received, I have the im
pression that regional branches of ica should actively stimulate the future ica events
in their regions.
The events In most countries, the organization of events was conducted by the archi
val agencies in cooperation with the professional associations. In some countries sup
port was also received from associations of historians and associations of documentalists.
At the national level, the programmes usually included large exhibitions and meetings,
as well as archival and historical publications. For internal reasons the theme of the Bonn
Congress was not always adopted.
At the regional and local levels, Archives Days were usually organized with lectures
exhibits and guided tours.
On the whole, the events received a good press and television coverage. I have the
impression that most of the initiatives would have been taken anyway. They were 'inter
nationalized' either by a change of title or by the adoption of the Bonn theme. In some
countries national congresses invited foreign colleagues to deliver lectures or to be guests
of honour.
Course on the management of archives At the request of ica/spa, the Archives School
of the Netherlands organized a course on the management of archives as a follow up
to the Bonn Congress (with English as working language).
During two weeks, 19 young colleagues from 14 countries representing all continents
discussed the problems of the management of archives on the basis of lectures, instruc
tions and guided visits to archival repositories. The subjects were primarily focussed
on services which employ five to ten persons.
It was surprising to learn that, contrary to our expectations, there were only a few
of the participants who combined this course with attendance at the Bonn Congress.
Most of them came only for the course.
There was only one person who profited from the offer made by the Dutch Archival
Community to stay in the country for a week visiting archives of its choice, ica/spa is
very grateful for the efforts of Mr Peter Sigmond, Director of Archival School and of
his professors, and for the subsidies generously provided by the Ministry of Culture,
the Morrenstichting', the Association of Dutch Archivists (van) and the local hosts.
The Benelux tour At the request of ica/spa the van prepared a tour of the Benelux
countries. For lack of participants, this tour of a dozen archives in the 'low' countries,
Be(lgium), Ne(therlands), Lux(emburg), which was to take place after the Bonn Con
gress, had to be cancelled. The van intends to organize a study tour of Belgian and
Luxemburg archives for its own members.
