SUMMARY
Maastricht and Lotharingia: Some Comments on Two Charters from 919
In a written judgment (placitumof June 13, 919 Charles the Simple decrees that Gisel-
brecht, an eminent Lotharingian, has to return the abbey of St. Servatius in Maastricht
to the archiepiscopal church of Trier. This is confirmed by Charles in a royal charter
preceptumof July 9, 919.
Why this solemn confirmation as soon as twenty-six days later? First of all because
earlier Giselbrecht and his father, Reinier, had taken the abbey of St. Servatius away
from the archbishop of Trier. The archbischop is anxious for an explicit confirmation
of his rights. Furthermore these charters illustrate the rivalry between the archbischop
of Trier, on the one hand, who served as archchancellor of Lotharingia and leader of
the Lotharingian episcopate, and Reinier and Giselbrecht, on the other hand, who were
leaders of the secular Lotharingian lords. Whichever of the two rivals held the more im
portant position under the reigning king (in this case Charles the Simple), was the pos
sessor of the abbey of St. Servatius. In 919 a demonstrative return of the abbey must
emphasize the good relations between king and archbishop, and the fall of Giselbrecht.
The placitum was not the best instrument for this, because after 814 the placitum was
only rarely used, and was therefore considered an old-fashioned form of charter. The
solemn royal preceptum was more satisfactory in this case.
The role played by the abbey of St. Servatius in this political struggle shows the great
importance of this abbey and thus also the importance of the city of Maastricht in the
first decades of the tenth century, the period in which the beginnings of the dual lord
ship of the city must be sought.
