Consequently, the focus will concentrate on the reporting of the High Government (HG) in Batavia and the local governments in the different provinces of the fast-shrinking Dutch colonial empire. At the moment the OIC was in charge of the ailing VOC, it also had to address the question of what to do with the archives of the latter in the Netherlands. This vast archival heritage, which was dispersed over various sites, was taken care of by nominating an archivist, a returned VOC employee who had made career in the province of Java's Northeast Coast.
