Nieuwe culturele logica maakt
van digitaal erfgoed een moving target
and no agreement on how the issue should be addressed. All these factors
restrain film archives today to conceive a form of open access to their collection
on a large scale.10
4 Presentation
Whereas film archives have moved on from a conservative to a more open
attitude regarding the use of digital technology in the fields of restoration and
access, there is still a strong resistance in accepting digital as an alternative form
of presentation (projection).
Digital projection at high resolution (the only kind of digital projection whose
quality is comparable with that of film projection) is not a viable option yet.
Projectors are too expensive and technology is still developing too rapidly,
resulting in a lack of standardisation.
However, apart from technical aspects, there is another important argument
against the use of digital projection for the presentation of archival films: if
preserving films as such is one of the film archives' primary task, preserving the
practice of film projection (viewing experience) is another one. For many film
archivists projecting a "film-born" film through a digital projector means
betraying its original form.
This argument will lose some relevancy when commercial film theatres will
move towards digital projection and new 'films' will be completely digital. At
that time film archives will have to introduce digital projection to remain true to
new "digitally-born" films. And they will then become the only place where the
projection experience for "film-born" films will be preserved.
Conclusion
Digital technology has changed and is changing cinema very rapidly. It has
dramatically affected film production: film editing, special effects and
animation, have been completely transformed, and all post-production processes
are quickly adopting digital workflows. Although traditional photographic film
has not been replaced yet for shooting and projection, digital technology is
becoming much more important even for these applications.
Changes in filmmaking have inspired new views on archival practices, which
will necessarily lead to radical changes in how archives preserve, restore, show
and give access to our film heritage. With respect to access, both film and
broadcast archives are already resorting to digital tools. Similarly new digital
resources are being adopted for film restoration. Although still very expensive
and yet to be largely improved, they are providing film restorers with new
effective tools. In the case of long-term preservation, points of views are
different within the archival community. While broadcast archives are adopting
digitisation and further migration of video content as a means of preservation
(as shown by the Presto Space project), film archives still resort to film as the
best available preservation medium for cinematographic film heritage
(as underlined by the FIRST project).
Inleiding
