Fig. 2.
SUMMARY
The Central Catalogue Cartopraphy
Complying with requests from various quarters a brief description of the activities of the Bureau
C.C.K., is given in the above article. The main object of the Central Catalogue Cartography is
to make maps, atlases, etc. in the possession of libraries, archives, museums, etc. better and more
easily accessible via a central data bank, containing the relevant descriptive elements of the maps
etc. in their collections. Although based on the Marc II Format for Maps as used by the Library
of Congress in Washington, the CCK system has been extended to an object-cataloguing system
of these elements for modern as well as 'old' maps and atlases.
I. As a result of these activities it will be possible:
to print catalogue cards and complete catalogues on various subject-entrances,
to make a selection on various important descriptive elements or combinations thereof, such
as geographical coordinates combined with mapscale or on chronological data, region,
author, title etc., which (in a later phase) can also be made available via terminals,
to exchange by means of tapes bibliographic data with foreign 'CCK' projects which are
also based on the Marc system.
II. A central effort is necessary because solid knowledge of maps and map cataloguing is
scarce, moreover individual computer facilities are very costly. A central effort has the
advantage that a multitude of indentic maps present in various collection can be very easily
catalogued by a special duplicating procedure as used by the CCK.
The pilot project (ending 1978) is divided into two phases. The first phase reached its end in
1973 and was mainly concerned with the technical side of testing programs for retrieval, selec
tion etc. and to build up an experimental data bank of some five thousand maps out of the
maps aiid atlases collection belonging to the Geographical Institute of the State University at
Utrecht A system for regional and thematical cataloguing was developed (based on the UDC).
Catalogue cards and subject catalogues produced by the computer were tested on their merits.
Furthermore the Marc Format for Maps has been adapted to the dutch cataloguing rules for
maps in so far as they are fit for modern cataloguing techniques.
The second phase starting this year is mainly dedicated to the development of a system of coope
ration between the CCK and various other institutes, archives and libraries etc., that have a
map collection of some importance. This in order to enter their maps in the Central Catalogue
via the computerized cataloguing system developed in the first phase of the project. Special
attention will be paid to archives (for instance the State Archive in the Hague) and their specific
and prominent contribution in providing information by means of a map together with its relevant
archive records.
On the opposite page an example is given of a complete record as it is stored in the computer
memory and printed for the purpose of correction and mutation before the actual catalogue
card (containing less information than contained in the complete record) is printed. All these
data however remain accessible in the data bank and will be used for instance when making a
selection on geograprical coordinates, if and when required, or when used in combination with
a terminal.
